{"id":1994,"date":"2011-02-01T01:12:48","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T06:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/?p=1994"},"modified":"2023-12-20T16:25:14","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T21:25:14","slug":"momo-all-hands-day-2-sunrise-the-meeting-room-demos-dinner-at-uncle-bos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/2011\/02\/01\/momo-all-hands-day-2-sunrise-the-meeting-room-demos-dinner-at-uncle-bos\/","title":{"rendered":"MoMo All-Hands:  Day 2 (Sunrise, The Meeting Room, Demos, Dinner at Uncle Bo\u2019s)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Sunrise<\/h3>\n<p>I woke up after a night of fitful dreaming about long airplane rides, dip masquerading as hummus and missing socks.<\/p>\n<p>I only had myself to blame for the socks.\u00a0 Em had awesomely helped me pack two weeks worth of clothes into a carry-on bag, and the socks had been my responsibility.\u00a0 <em>Sigh<\/em>.\u00a0 Oh well.<\/p>\n<p>It was early at this point.\u00a0 Too early.\u00a0 I glanced at the bedside clock&#8230;6 AM.\u00a0 It&#8217;d been a long time since I&#8217;d been up this early.\u00a0 And yet, strangely, I felt fully rested.<\/p>\n<p>Fully rested, and <em>excited<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>I was in Hawaii, baby!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was determined to make the best of the early morning, and watch the sunrise.\u00a0 So, I scrambled around, getting dressed &#8211; during which, I got a few shots of the sun starting to rise through my hotel room window.<\/p>\n<p>[simage=736,288]<br \/>\n[simage=737,288]<br \/>\n[simage=738,288]<\/p>\n<p>It was time to hit the pavement.\u00a0 I threw on my sandals, and stepped into the elevator.\u00a0 I tried not to think about my sock problem.\u00a0 I figured I would spend  most of my trip in sandals, so the lack of socks really wouldn&#8217;t be an  issue until later on in the trip.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel was pretty close to the beach, but the sun was coming up fast, and I didn&#8217;t want to miss it.\u00a0 I started jogging, flew past <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?client=ubuntu&amp;channel=fs&amp;q=hawaii+hilton+lagoon&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Hilton+Lagoon&amp;ei=XpBHTZrzM4misAPNkuGcAg&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=geocode_result&amp;ct=title&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CBgQ8gEwAA\">the Hilton lagoon<\/a>, and made it to the beach in time to take these shots:<\/p>\n<p>[simage=739,288]<br \/>\n[simage=740,288]<br \/>\n[simage=741,288]<br \/>\n[simage=742,288]<br \/>\n[simage=743,288]<br \/>\n[simage=744,288]<\/p>\n<p>And this video:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/htur0ryXeNk?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>It was very peaceful and serene.<\/p>\n<p>[simage=745,288]<br \/>\n[simage=746,288]<\/p>\n<p>Before going back up, I took a few minutes to walk around the hotel.\u00a0 There was a nice decorative fountain near the entrance, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Kona_coffee\">Kona Coffee<\/a> shop.<\/p>\n<p>[simage=748,288]<br \/>\n[simage=747,288]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a big coffee drinker, but apparently Kona Coffee is a pretty <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/BFD#Other\">BFD<\/a>.\u00a0 Before I left home, my Mom asked me to bring a few bags back.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have a chance on this morning though &#8211; the Kona Coffee shop was closed:<\/p>\n<p>[simage=749,288]<\/p>\n<p>I eventually made it back to my room to grab a quick shower and shave before the 9AM breakfast.<\/p>\n<h3>The Meeting Room<\/h3>\n<p>The hotel we were staying at was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilikaihotel.com\/\">Ilikai Hotel<\/a>, which is featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w\">the opening to Hawaii Five-O.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hotel didn&#8217;t want you to forget that either &#8211; they were pumping episodes of Hawaii Five-O through some flat-screens near reception, 24\/7.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the hotel rooms, the Ilikai was also providing a meeting room for the team for the week.\u00a0 The meeting room was also where breakfast and lunch would be served.\u00a0 It was a pretty awesome arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some shots of the meeting room.<\/p>\n<p>[simage=750,288]<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got a patio outside too, in case we decide that we need to have a meeting in the sun:<\/p>\n<p>[simage=751,288]<br \/>\n[simage=752,288]<br \/>\n[simage=753,288]<\/p>\n<p>When I got to the meeting room, there were already a bunch of people there, and I went around and said a lot of hello&#8217;s.\u00a0 Once again, a lot of names and faces flew by, and it was hard to keep them all straight in my head.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast was yogurt with granola, and what appeared to be banana bread.\u00a0 Delicious.<\/p>\n<p>After breakfast, David Ascher gave a talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillamessaging.com\/en-US\/about\/mission\/\">the mission of Mozilla Messaging<\/a>, and what we&#8217;d accomplished in 2010, and what we were aiming to accomplish in 2011.\u00a0 There was a nice and easy, accessible vibe in the room, and I don&#8217;t think it was just because everybody was wearing Hawaiian shirts &#8211; the whole crew just seemed to gel that way.<\/p>\n<p>After the talk, we more or less figured out the schedule for the rest of the week.\u00a0 That day, we&#8217;d be doing a bunch of demos.<\/p>\n<h3>Demos<\/h3>\n<p>The demos were pretty cool.\u00a0 Blake did one on the account provisioning service that he&#8217;s been working on for Thunderbird:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=17810751&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=1&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1&amp;autoplay=0&amp;loop=0\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>And then showed off some more <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Thunderbird\/Netbooks\/Designs\/Add-ons\/Thunderbird_Air\">experimental work that he and a few others been doing on a project called Thunderbird Air<\/a>.\u00a0 Think of Thunderbird Air as a jam session for ideas about messaging interfaces.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p>Then, we got a demo of <a href=\"http:\/\/f1.mozillamessaging.com\/\">F1, MoMo&#8217;s shiny new Firefox add-on that makes sharing stuff easy.<\/a> It&#8217;s pretty badass.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s an early video showing off what F1 does:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=17619444&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=1&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1&amp;autoplay=0&amp;loop=0\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>After that, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visophyte.org\/blog\/\">Andrew Sutherland<\/a> gave a talk on the new widgeting library he was working on called <a href=\"http:\/\/hg.mozilla.org\/users\/bugmail_asutherland.org\/wmsy\/\">WMSY<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, there was a big talk about mail storage with <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.davidbienvenu.org\/\">David Bienvenu<\/a> &#8211; one of the original developers of Thunderbird.<\/p>\n<p>After that, it was lunch break.\u00a0 Salad and sandwiches.\u00a0 Very tasty.\u00a0 There was also some peculiar bread that had a sweet taste and was blue\/purple inside.\u00a0 Very interesting.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, people just hacked on their laptops for a bit, and chatted.\u00a0 Smaller discussions about other projects broke out.\u00a0 People went out onto the patio for sun.\u00a0 Very relaxed and casual.\u00a0 Eventually, someone plugged in the XBox and the Kinect, and we watched <a href=\"http:\/\/ascher.ca\/blog\/\">David Ascher<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/redpuma.net\/blog\/\">Dan Mosedale<\/a> do some extreme white-water rafting.<\/p>\n<h3>Dinner at Uncle Bo&#8217;s<\/h3>\n<p>Eventually, things wound down.\u00a0 Old habits die hard, and the group started to fold around 5PM.\u00a0 At that point, I packed up my stuff and headed back to my room.\u00a0 I talked to Em on Skype.\u00a0 I got ready for dinner &#8211; I&#8217;d be meeting the rest of the group downstairs at 6PM.<\/p>\n<p>[simage=754,288]<br \/>\n[simage=755,288]<\/p>\n<p>I showed up at the lobby just in time for <a href=\"http:\/\/sancus.off.net\/\">Sancus<\/a> to tell me that we were meeting at 6:30PM instead of 6PM.\u00a0 That gave me just enough time to run around and try to grab a few photos:<\/p>\n<p>[simage=756,288]<br \/>\n[simage=757,288]<br \/>\n[simage=758,288]<br \/>\n[simage=759,288]<br \/>\n[simage=760,288]<br \/>\n[simage=762,288]<\/p>\n<p>I got back to the lobby just in time to meet the group as we started to head to a restaurant called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unclebosrestaurant.com\/\">Uncle Bo&#8217;s<\/a>&#8220;. Apparently, it&#8217;s pretty well known in Hawaii.\u00a0 The food was eclectic, but tasty.\u00a0 I spent most of dinner talking with <a href=\"http:\/\/tagneto.blogspot.com\">James Burke<\/a>, John Hopkins, <a href=\"http:\/\/ccgi.standard8.plus.com\/blog\/\">Mark Banner<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sifry.com\/\">David Sifry<\/a> about things like <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Faulty_Towers\">British humour<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Top_Gear_%282002_TV_series%29\">Top Gear<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.419eater.com\/html\/letters.htm\">trolling Nigerian prince scammers<\/a>.\u00a0 Good times.<\/p>\n<p>Watermelon sorbet for dessert.\u00a0 Delicious.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t take photos during the dinner (at this point, I still didn&#8217;t know everybody, and would have felt weird photographing them), but I know <a href=\"http:\/\/rolandtanglao.com\/\">Roland Tanglao<\/a> did.\u00a0 Here are a few:<\/p>\n<p>[simage=763,288]<br \/>\n[simage=764,288]<br \/>\n[simage=765,288]<br \/>\n[simage=768,288]<\/p>\n<p>Stuffed, we cabbed back home.\u00a0 Some of the team was headed to a patio on the beach, and I tagged along.\u00a0 As some live music played, I talked school and science fiction with Andrew Sutherland and <a href=\"http:\/\/gozer.ectoplasm.org\/blog\/\">Gozer<\/a>.\u00a0 I also found out that Gozer is a pool shark, and we decided to find a time to hit a pool hall sometime over the week.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, a wave of exhaustion hit me, and I decided to head back to the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>I made my way back to my room, jotted down my daily notes, and nodded off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/2011\/01\/30\/momo-all-hands-day-1\/\">Click here to go back to Part 1.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunrise I woke up after a night of fitful dreaming about long airplane rides, dip masquerading as hummus and missing socks.
