{"id":299,"date":"2009-03-07T16:37:55","date_gmt":"2009-03-07T21:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/?p=299"},"modified":"2023-12-20T16:25:21","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T21:25:21","slug":"memorizing-my-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/2009\/03\/07\/memorizing-my-lines\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorizing My Lines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In all of my performance classes, without fail, I&#8217;ve had to memorize lines at some point or another.<\/p>\n<p>This year, in Voice class, I had to memorize an edited version of JFK&#8217;s &#8220;We go to the moon&#8221; speech.\u00a0 I was the one who edited it, and it came down to about a little <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/Doc?id=dcqfgq2h_120cpb5pmcn\">over a page of text<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And I memorized it, fluidly, in about 3 days.\u00a0 Not bad.<\/p>\n<p>So, here&#8217;s how I normally go about memorizing my lines:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If there is an original recording of the speech, or lines in question, <em>avoid it at all costs<\/em>.\u00a0 Do not taint your performance with someone else&#8217;s interpretation.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the text.\u00a0 This is the most important part.\u00a0 What am I saying?\u00a0 Why am I saying it?\u00a0 Who am I saying it to?\u00a0 Why do they care?\u00a0 Why do I care?\u00a0 What is causing me to speak?<\/li>\n<li>Examine the text for clues.\u00a0 What is the key word, or idea in each sentence?\u00a0 Look for rhetorical devices, like metaphor, repetition, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Break the text into &#8220;argument&#8221; sections.\u00a0 These are usually just paragraphs.<\/li>\n<li>Record myself speaking the lines, without any &#8220;acting&#8221; &#8211; just speaking them normally, and adding the appropriate pauses and breaks for punctuation.<\/li>\n<li>Break that recording up into the argument sections, and put the individual files on my MP3 player in speaking order<\/li>\n<li>While I&#8217;m walking in between classes, play the sections.\u00a0 Listen to myself, pretending I&#8217;m the audience.\u00a0 Ponder how to deliver what I&#8217;m hearing.\u00a0 Ponder how to deliver any rhetorical devices.<\/li>\n<li>Start to speak the lines with the recording.\u00a0 For me, this is the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kinesthetic_learning\">kinesthetic learning<\/a> bit.\u00a0 My mouth and lips learn the &#8220;dance&#8221; of the speech, so that if I happen to forget a line, my mouth and lips know where to go for the next line, which may remind me what my next line is (understanding the logical structure of the argument also helps to pull out of forgotten lines &#8211; if I need to get from A to C, of course I need B&#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>Repeat repeat repeat.\u00a0 Keep playing the MP3 player, and speaking the lines to myself.\u00a0 Go section by section.<\/li>\n<li>Play the MP3 player even when I&#8217;m working on other things, so that it&#8217;s playing in the background.<\/li>\n<li>Sleep (without the MP3 player playing).\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing how, in the morning, all the stuff that I&#8217;ve been repeating in my ears and with my mouth is still there, and comes faster and naturally.<\/li>\n<li>Now I&#8217;m ready to try to rehearse this thing.\u00a0 If I have scene partners, I get together with them and just give it a shot.\u00a0 If I&#8217;m doing a solo performance (like with the JFK speech), I try delivering it aloud to an audience of friends.<\/li>\n<li>Practice practice practice.\u00a0 Rehearse.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get stuck in a delivery pattern.\u00a0 I try new things:\u00a0 I dance the speech, yell the speech, whisper the speech, seduce with the speech.\u00a0 I get playful.\u00a0 I put the <em>story <\/em>of the speech at higher priority than my performance; what is absolutely necessary is that the message\/story gets across.\u00a0 The &#8220;acting&#8221; is secondary.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And that&#8217;s how I do it.\u00a0 Nothing special, and it works for me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In all of my performance classes, without fail, I&#8217;ve had to memorize lines at some point or another.
