{"id":822,"date":"2009-10-04T20:34:10","date_gmt":"2009-10-05T01:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/?p=822"},"modified":"2023-12-20T16:25:18","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T21:25:18","slug":"coming-up-with-interesting-research-questions-and-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeconley.ca\/blog\/2009\/10\/04\/coming-up-with-interesting-research-questions-and-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming Up with Interesting Research Questions, and Idea #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So my supervisor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.third-bit.com\/\">Greg Wilson<\/a> has challenged myself and fellow grad student <a href=\"http:\/\/zuzelvp47uoft.wordpress.com\/\">Zuzel<\/a> to try to come up with one idea for a study per day until our next meeting.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been researching the use of code reviews in CS undergraduate classes, and this is what my ideas will center around.<\/p>\n<p>My first idea is a knock-off of one that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.toronto.edu\/~jaranda\/\">Jorge Aranda<\/a> performed a while back:<\/p>\n<p>Take a group of students, and tell them that they will all be working together on an assignment. Give them a spec for their assignment.\u00a0 Get a time estimate in hours as to how long they think they will need to complete the assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Take a second group of students (who were not present when the first group was around), and tell them that they will be working together on an assignment.\u00a0 Give them the same spec that the first group had.\u00a0 Tell them that they will need to use a peer code review tool like ReviewBoard for every commit.\u00a0 Get a time estimate on how long they will need to complete the assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Compare the two sets of estimates.<\/p>\n<p>I predict that the second set will have a higher range of values.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t find that surprising.\u00a0 I&#8217;m more interested in <em>how <\/em>much higher the estimates are.<\/p>\n<p>I remember my first reaction to using ReviewBoard on MarkUs:\u00a0 <em>This&#8217;ll slow us down.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have time for this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m curious if others feel the same way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So my supervisor Greg Wilson has challenged myself and fellow grad student Zuzel to try to come up with one idea for a study per day until our next meeting.
